Explore Supplemental Academic Programs

Students looking to vary their academic backgrounds and increase their career options often consider pursuing a double major, a minor, a certificate program, or a pre-professional pathway such as pre-health or pre-law. Many CNMS majors will allow for enough credit time and space to consider these kinds of supplemental academic programs.

Take your time reviewing your options and consider using your general education coursework to explore other disciplines — especially within your first year or two at UMBC.

While the CNMS Advising Office will provide support for your primary major, it is important to review all of the program requirements for these other areas of interest. See below for more information.

Students planning to pursue a health profession work with specially-trained health professions advisors in one of two offices on campus, determined by the specific health profession being pursued.

Students planning to apply to Law School, or who wish to pursue employment in law-related areas, will want to work with the Pre-Law Advising Office, which coordinates the Pre-Law program. Molly Timko (mtimko@umbc.edu) currently serves as UMBC’s Pre-Law Advisor.

While the department of a student’s declared major is the primary point of contact for registration clearance each semester, supplemental advising is equally important. Aim to meet with your supplemental advisor on a regular basis.
