After Orientation

Once you have completed the virtual advising and registration portion of New Student Orientation, consider reviewing the task list below in preparation for your first semester at UMBC.

  • Confirm your declared major/minor interests. Review your declared major(s)/minor(s) via your myUMBC profile and submit any necessary changes through a Declaration of Major Form. You can view a helpful video guide about this process here.
  • Follow CNMS Advising on Instagram to stay on top of advising news, events, updates, and more! Also, check out and subscribe to our advising and academic success videos on YouTube.
  • Plan to attend a CNMS Advising summer workshop, guest speaker panel, and/or or virtual office hours to get jump start on the semester. CNMS Advising also hosts a semester readiness series in August — stay tuned!
  • Review your schedule. Visit CNMS Advising’s Registration FAQ page for more information on registration troubleshooting, waitlist policy, and understanding multiple component courses.
  • Consult CNMS Advising if you are considering major-related schedule adjustments.  You can continue to alter your schedules until the end of the schedule adjustment period (typically two weeks into the semester); however you will want to exercise caution if you are adjusting your major course suggestions since these can be time/sequence sensitive. NOTE: Advisors cannot change your schedule for you.
  • Familiarize yourself with your myUMBC account. This is your gateway to services, information, and connections to the campus community. Specifically, this is where you can access your email, Google calendar, academic schedule, registration system, alerts, Blackboard, campus groups, financial aid, and student billing.
  • When contacting any UMBC faculty or staff member by email, you should always use your UMBC email account and include your Campus ID.
  • Find out what materials (textbooks, technology, etc.) are required for each of your classes. Students who obtain all of the required materials (and use them) have a better chance for success in their courses. The UMBC Bookstore (see “Course Materials”) can help you sort all that out!
