Academic Policy Reminders

Throughout a student’s experience at UMBC it is important to be aware of campus and academic policies. At each step of the orientation process the CNMS Advising Team will be educating and assisting students with timely policy reminders.

Before students attend their online registration appointment, it is encouraged that they review the following policies.

MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS

According to UMBC policy, a student may not register for a course more than two times including registration in an UMBC equivalent course at another institution. Registration is defined as being enrolled in a course after the end of the schedule adjustment period in which the student receives a grade or an official withdrawal on the transcript. Those students with two previous attempts may petition the Academic Success Center for a third and final attempt of a course whether this attempt is taken at UMBC or a transfer institution. More information about the petition process can be found on the Academic Success Center: Academic Policy website.

Those transfer students with two previous attempts at a required course should consider planning to petition for a third and final attempt once completing at least one semester at UMBC, showing aptitude in other major requirement courses, and earning a minimal UMBC GPA of a 2.0.

PASS/FAIL SPRING 2020 COURSEWORK ONLY

According to the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences policy, Pass/Fail grades are accepted in all Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics courses required for the Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Biology Education, and Chemistry Education majors for the Spring 2020 semester. This one semester exception also includes the ability for Pass grades to meet prerequisites or any further coursework in the above majors. This same policy applies to transfer coursework completed during the Spring 2020 semester.
